155th Russian Marine Brigade: High Losses and Ongoing Battle in Ukraine

As noted, the names of 234 dead servicemen were identified by the BBC together with the Mediazona publication through open sources.

Among the dead are said to be at least 18 officers, including the head of the armored service, Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Moskvichev, four majors and five captains.

After studying the location of graves in cemeteries in Primorye and neighboring regions, journalists suggested that the brigade’s actual casualties could be about 470 people.

At the same time, the number of seriously wounded may be about 950 people, since for every soldier killed during the current war, there are 1.7-2 seriously wounded.

In addition, on social networks, relatives reported that 42 brigade soldiers were missing.

It is noted that during the invasion of Ukraine, the Marines performed tasks usually assigned to combined arms formations, for example, a foot assault on enemy positions.

They suffered the greatest losses in the Kyiv region in the first weeks of the war, as well as during attempts to storm Vugledar in the Donetsk region in the fall of 2022.

According to the Ukrainian military, it was the 155th brigade that took part in the capture of Bucha, Irpen and Gostomel and could have been involved in the killings of civilians.

According to media reports, a third of the losses of the 155th brigade were mobilized. The large number of deaths is confirmed by the fact that the brigade began to be replenished with former prisoners who signed contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Despite high losses, the Russian authorities manage to replenish the brigade, avoiding its disbandment. She continues fighting in the Ugledar area. The last time news about the death of a Marine of the 155th Brigade was published was December 1.

According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), despite significant losses in manpower and equipment, in particular among the elite units of the Russian Federation, the occupiers are not giving up attempts to capture the city of Ugledar in the Donetsk region.

The ISW report provided data according to which the 155th Marine Brigade of the Russian Federation, which is considered “elite,” has been destroyed and restored as many as 8 times since the beginning of the invasion.

Let us also recall that in February, the Ukrainian military near Ugledar completely defeated the elite brigade of the Russian Marines.

At the time, analysts pointed out that the failure at Ugledar had weakened Russians’ faith in their ability to launch a new large-scale offensive.
