NEW YORK – The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) urged Israel leave possession of nuclear weapons.

The “Risk of Nuclear Proliferation in the Middle East” resolution had 153 votes, and only six countries did not, with 25 abstentions.

The United States (US), an ally of Israel, was among the six countries that did not vote on the resolution.

The resolution is part of a large package of UN-approved resolutions relating to nuclear disarmament, globally and in the Middle East. (Also Read: Covering Business in Israeli Settlements, Amnesty Condemns Airbnb Ahead of IPO)

In addition, the United Nations calls on Israel, “To give up possession of nuclear weapons and place all unattended nuclear facilities under institutional safeguards as an important step towards building trust among all countries in the region and as a step towards promoting peace and security.” (See Video: HRS Gives a Statement about the Seconds of the Shooting of the FPI Laskar)

Of the 193 UN member states, 191 countries are part of the Nuclear Weapons Non-Proliferation Treaty. Israel never signed the agreement.
