On Friday, June 30, in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Song Festival, the Bank of Latvia (LB) is releasing a silver collection coin dedicated to this event “Song thrills”.

2023 marks the 150th anniversary of the 1st General Latvian Singing Festival. From the first celebration with 1000 singers, it has grown into a powerful movement with several tens of thousands of singers and dancers.
The graphic design of the LB coin was created by artists Anna Līva Traumane and Harijs Vucens. The coin captures the feelings of the Song Festival: the emotional multicolor characteristic of the festival, the sense of community, the musical and emotional excitement, as well as the visual splendor – the wide and diverse color spectrum of folk costumes.
In accordance with the artists’ idea, the movement of choirs, fluttering ribbons and buntings, flags, emotional excitement and the song itself – a sound wave, characteristic of the Song Festival are used in the form of a coin. The color and brightness resonate with the variety of folk costumes, the festive mood and the feeling of elation.
The fusion of many colors symbolizes the coming together of different people and traditions from different places in a unified chorus. Side by side, the singers become one chorus, merge into one song, explains the central bank.
“We are used to round-shaped coins. However, the Latvian song festival is a worldwide cultural phenomenon, and a horizontal rectangular shape has been created for this coin,” says LB.
The purchase of the collection coin will be possible only on the website e-monetas.lv from June 30 at 12.00 It will be possible to receive the purchases by mail or in person at the LB cash desks in Riga, Bezdelīgu street 3. To ensure a smooth flow of customers, a balanced schedule will be applied for receiving orders at the LB cash desks – in the order confirmation, the customer will be informed of the date from which the order can be received at the cash desks.
Coin price – 89.00 euros, purchase limit per person – 3 coins. The mintage of the coin is 4000 copies. The coin was made in the Romanian mint “Regia Autonomǎ Monetǎria Statului”.
