New York, Feb. 23 Almost 1,500 millionaires left New York in 2021, a figure that points to a slowdown in the exodus of the richest residents, but their total number in the city continues to grow and there are now 80,000 who make up that select club, as reported this Thursday The New York Times.
The newspaper, which cites data from the state Department of Taxes and Finance, points out that 1,453 millionaire taxpayers left New York in 2021, 520 less than in 2020, the year of the pandemic, in which departures tripled compared to 2019.
But within the category of millionaires there were differences: the exodus of the richest, with earnings of more than 25 million dollars a year, increased, while that of the least rich, with between 5 and 25 million, fell slightly.
Still, the figures reveal that the total number of millionaires in New York grew from 70,000 in 2020 to 80,000 in 2021, the report added, reflecting that the rich got even richer.
According to data from the Office of Income Taxes used by the state agency, when millionaires leave New York they usually end up in the neighboring state, New Jersey, and secondly in Florida, which have less demanding tax regimes.
