The police arrested 150 people on Sunday during the banned and dissolved demonstration on the Museumplein in Amsterdam, the police reports Sunday evening.
The demonstration of action group Netherlands in Resistance was announced in advance on Facebook. The action was directed against the Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema under the title ‘Drinking coffee for freedom’.
The municipality had given permission for this and designated Arena Park as the location, but it was expected that demonstrators would go to Museumplein because this was also stated as the location at the event.
About three hundred demonstrators then gathered on Museumplein. Subsequently, the triangle (municipality, police and judiciary) issued an emergency order. The area had already been designated a safety risk area in advance due to the expected protest.
On Sunday afternoon, the Mobile Unit (ME) of the police intervened. A water cannon was used to drive away the protesters. After the demonstration had been dissolved, it was restless for several hours in the surrounding streets of Museumplein. At around 5.30 pm, peace returned and the police packed up.
Saturday also disbanded demonstration on Museumplein
A demonstration on the Museumplein was also dissolved on Saturday. A water cannon was then deployed. After the police had reported that everyone would be arrested, the group of more than a thousand demonstrators moved through the city in a procession from the Museumplein. They were later shut in by the riot police.
58 people were arrested on Museumplein. They have since been released, a police spokesman said on Sunday.
According to the police, it depends on the fact for which the people have been arrested whether there is a fine or whether the Public Prosecution Service will prosecute. The latter can happen, for example, if violence has been committed against the police.
