TAIPEI – President Taiwan warn China to practice restraint in his first speech since 150 People’s Liberation Army (PLA) warplanes conducted exercises near the island for five days.

In a brief address to party leaders in Taipei, Tsai Ing-wen said the wave of PLA planes’ surprise attacks on the southwest corner of Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) had become a topic of mutual concern for the international community.

China’s actions have seriously undermined regional peace and stability,” he told the Central Standing Committee of the Democratic Progressive Party.

“I must solemnly warn the authorities in Beijing to exercise restraint to avoid miscalculations.” Newsweek, Wednesday (6/10/2021).

Tsai also used her remarks to congratulate new Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and thank former Japanese leader Yoshihide Suga for supporting Taiwan.

Chinese military flights into international airspace between Taiwan and the Taiwan-held Pratas Island have steadily increased since September 2020, when defense officials in Taipei first began to note the activity, which sometimes sees PLA fighter jets or bombers besiege southern Taiwan.

In the 13 months since, 842 PLA aircraft have entered Taiwan’s ADIZ – including 672 this year – in what Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense has described as a targeted military provocation. In the four days since October 1, the Chinese warplanes numbered 38, 39, 16 and 56. On Tuesday, the PLA sent a reconnaissance plane near Taiwan.
