The service was one of four decentralized offers made by the Sant’Egidio community in Würzburg. Further devotions took place in the community rooms in Schönthalstrasse, in the parish church of the Holy Cross and in the parish church of Saint Albert. Also this year, due to the pandemic, it was not possible to have a joint celebration with food in a large group like years ago, for example in the post hall. Bishop Dr. Franz Jung took part in the Sant’Egidio Christmas service for the needy in the Würzburg Marienkapelle. St. Nicholas of the Community of Sant’Egidio had a personal Christmas present for every visitor. For every visitor, St. Nicholas of the Community of Sant’Egidio had a personal Christmas present, also for Bishop Jung.

The participants each received a personal gift and a warm festive meal. They received the latter, packed in an insulated bag, to take home with them. Bishop Jung helped with the distribution of food at the Marienkapelle and after the Christmas devotion distributed warm meals to take away to the participants. In total, the around 150 helpers from Sant’Egido in the Würzburg area looked after around 800 people on Christmas Day. Deliveries were made to those who could not attend one of the devotions.

Sign of active friendship

“Nobody has to be ashamed of their need for help,” emphasized Bishop Jung in his sermon. Nobody is just strong or just weak. When Jesus comes into the world as a small child, then that is also a hint to people to deal well and considerately with the weaknesses and mistakes of others. He thanked the members of Sant’Egido who, with the Marienkapelle as the spiritual center in the heart of the city of Würzburg and with signs of active friendship, ensured that the idea of humanity as one big family was kept alive.

Pastor Dr. Matthias Leineweber, Rector of the Lady Chapel, explained that it was precisely this thought that was why members of the community organized a Christmas dinner for the needy for the first time in Rome in 1982 in the Church of Santa Maria in the Trastevere district. Today there are such events in 70 countries worldwide, around 300,000 people receive gifts and food at Christmas. pow
