150 employees are on strike at Ikea – no agreement in sight

Several Ikea furniture stores are on strike on Tuesday. The Verdi union is demanding higher wages for employees, among other things. The strike was preceded by months of wage disputes.

In the wage conflict in the retail trade that has been smoldering for months, the Verdi union is calling for a nationwide day of strikes in several Ikea furniture stores in Lower Saxony and Bremen this Tuesday. The Großburgwedel, Hanover Expo-Park, Bremerhaven, Osnabrück and Braunschweig locations will be affected from the morning, as Verdi announced.

According to union information, in addition to the furniture stores in north-west Germany, shops in Bavaria, Hesse, Hamburg, Baden-Württemberg, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and North Rhine-Westphalia are also taking part in the strike. Ikea declined to comment, citing ongoing negotiations.

Verdi negotiator Sabine Gatz said that Ikea was a member of the Lower Saxony collective bargaining committee and was taking part in the “nationwide blockade of retail companies, so that employees still lack a reasonable pay increase and appreciation for their good work”.

In Hanover, Verdi demands a “conclusive” offer from Ikea

The day of the strike also sends a message in the direction of the wage negotiations taking place at the same time in North Rhine-Westphalia. “A serious, final offer must finally be on the table,” she said. A strike rally is planned between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. in front of the Großburgwedel furniture store.

Among other things, Verdi demands an increase in wages and salaries for retail workers by 4.5 percent plus 45 euros per month for all employees, 100 euros more training allowance and a minimum income of 12.50 euros per hour for a period of twelve months.

150 people involved in the strike, but still no solution in sight

Verdi state press spokesman Matthias Büschking told t-online that 150 Ikea employees took part in the day of the strike. They usually work at the locations in Bremerhaven, Braunschweig, Hanover and Osnabrück and came to Großburgwedel to hear the rally there. “There is still no new negotiation date with Ikea and it cannot yet be estimated whether there will be more strike days,” said Büschking.
