At an Extinction Rebellion protest against subsidies to the fossil fuel industry, police made 150 arrests. The Climate Action Group had blocked the A12 near The Hague in both directions. At 15:00 the blockade was lifted and the road reopened.
Extinction Rebellion reported that hundreds of protesters were present on the A12. The arrests can be seen in the images of the action group’s live stream. Only later did the police communicate the exact number of arrests.
The police had previously ordered the action group to leave and go to Malieveld to continue protesting there. The municipality had also banned the highway blockade. “Danger to demonstrators, bystanders or traffic is not permitted,” the municipality of The Hague said on Twitter.
The demonstration was held near the provisional House of Representatives and the Ministry of Economy and Climate. According to the group, this is the fourth time in a short time that demonstrations have been held at this location.
After Extinction Rebellion had to leave the police force, dozens of activists sat on the street. Some had bonded. Police doused people’s hands with bottled cola to loosen the glue. Finally, the arrested protesters were taken to the police station.
