Braga driver Francisco Macedo (Kiko), just 15 years old, and who, in October, was national karting champion in the two main categories, X30 Sénior and Senior Max, has just been hired to race in Formula 4 for the Spanish team Drivex.
Francisco complains, however, about not being able to train at the Braga race track due to restrictions imposed by the City Council due to the conciliation of use on weekends between the car track and the aerodrome, which is right next door. This is because the ANAC-National Civil Aviation Authority does not allow both equipment to operate simultaneously for safety reasons.
One of his family members told JN that the Municipality’s measure forces the young pilot to go and train in Spain with the consequent losses both in financial and sporting terms, aggravated by the fact that he is a secondary school student. “The council restriction is not understood. It’s not every day that Braga has a young man who is outstanding in motorsport, but whose development is therefore limited”, he lamented.
Contacted about this, the vice-president and councilor for Sports, Sameiro Araújo explained that, for Kiko to train, the aerodrome would have to close: “I have always strived to have high-competition athletes in Braga and I am happy with the young man’s career. pilot. But the Chamber has to reconcile the two activities, that is, there are two weekends in which KIB (Karting Investimentos de Braga) uses the race track and another two in which it closes so that the airfield can operate”.
The mayor says that, if the race track were open for pilots to train on days when the runway is open, ANAC would close the airfield: “Furthermore, KIB filed an administrative action against the Chamber, which is awaiting judgment, and This would turn against us in terms of sentencing”, he highlighted.
Sameiro Araújo emphasizes that the problem would be solved if an investment “of some size” was made in the car runway, to divert the route, which would have to be done by KIB: “changing the runway is much more difficult”.
