4. Turmeric
Turmeric has traditionally been used for many ailments over the years, including coughs. Its active compound, curcumin, has strong anti-inflammatory properties. It is recommended to consume turmeric with black pepper. This is because piperine, the main compound in black pepper, increases the bioavailability of turmeric. This supports your body’s absorption of turmeric.
5. Bromelain (pineapple)
Studies show that bromelain, an enzyme found only in the stem and fruit of the pineapple, can help suppress cough and loosen mucus in the throat. To enjoy the benefits of pineapple and bromelain, you can simply eat a piece of pineapple or drink 3.5 ounces of fresh pineapple juice three times a day.
Other studies have also shown that bromelain can help relieve sinusitis and allergic sinus problems, which can cause cough and mucus. Bromelain is also sometimes used to treat inflammation and swelling.
6. N-acetylcysteine (NAC)
NAC is a supplement derived from the amino acid L-cysteine. Taking a daily dose can reduce the frequency and severity of a wet cough by reducing mucus in the airways. A meta-analysis of 13 studies showed that NAC can significantly and consistently reduce symptoms in people with chronic bronchitis.
Chronic bronchitis is prolonged inflammation of the airways that causes mucus to build up, cough, and other symptoms. Researchers suggest a daily dose of 600 milligrams (mg) of NAC for people with no airway obstruction and up to 1,200 mg for obstruction.
