15 Iconic Objects Humans Have Seen on Mars: From Mars Book to Teddy Bear Face and Frozen Flowers

SPACE — Humans have seen strange things on the surface of Mars for centuries. Maybe because Mars is the closest planet in the solar system that can also harbor life.

Whatever it is, Earthlings are time and time again deceived by the rocky surface of Mars, and their own psychology. From eerie humanoid figures to bears, and Beatles birds, here are 15 of the most iconic objects humans have ever seen on the Red Planet.

1. Mars Book

Perhaps tired from hunting for evidence of water on the surface of Mars, NASA’s Curiosity rover robot took a short break in April 2023. It opened the pages of an old hardback book lying in the dust of Gediz Vallis.

Although the strange object looks like a book with a page frozen in the middle, it is actually just a tiny stone. According to NASA, the charming little rock is 2.5 centimeters wide.

2. Teddy Bear Face

In an image shared in January 2023 by the University of Arizona (UA), a very large teddy bear’s face appears on the surface of Mars. The face is complete with two beady eyes, a button nose, and a raised mouth, grinning at NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter camera.

According to UA, the cuddly-wuddly formation is probably just a fragment of a hill in the middle of an ancient Martian crater.

3. Frozen Flowers

Branching like tiny corals, these delicate mineral flowers are the greenest plants to be found on the Red Planet today. Curiosity spotted the flower feature in February 2022.
