Fifteen causes that cause dementia symptoms to appear at a young age have been identified. This research result shatters the common belief that ‘youthful dementia’, which commonly occurs in people under the age of 65, is caused by genetic factors.

A joint research team from the University of Exeter in the UK and the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands announced on the 27th that they had identified risk factors for early onset dementia, including social and economic factors, lifestyle, and health problems, as a result of a cohort study of over 350,000 British people under the age of 65. The results of this study were published in the latest issue of JAMA Neurology, the journal of the American Medical Association (AMA).

The researchers followed 356,052 adults under the age of 65 who participated in the UK Biobank, a large-scale biological data collection program, for up to 15 years. All of them had no symptoms of dementia at the beginning of observation. The researchers investigated factors such as genetic factors, lifestyle habits, and environmental factors, along with their cognitive abilities.

During the follow-up study, a total of 485 people developed dementia before the age of 65, and 251 of them were men. The incidence rate per 100,000 person-years was 16.8.

Among potential dementia-causing factors, 15 actually showed a significant association with an increased risk of dementia. Among these, orthostatic hypotension was found to be the factor that increases the incidence of dementia in young people, and alcoholism and depression were the next most dangerous factors. Additionally, stroke, apolipoprotein E gene, vitamin D deficiency, high C-reactive protein levels, hearing impairment, diabetes, and heart disease were found to be physical factors that cause dementia. Among social factors, low formal education and low socioeconomic status were found to have an effect on increasing the incidence of dementia. On the other hand, moderate alcohol use, strong grip strength, and formal education had an effect on lowering the incidence rate.

Professor Sebastian Köhler of Maastricht University said, “The results of this study show that chronic stress, loneliness, and depression, which are known to affect dementia in old age, also play an important role in the development of dementia in young people.” He added, “We can prevent the early onset of dementia.” “It can be used to reduce it,” he said.
