The operator Korian did not provide any information about why the outbreak and the deaths were only now known. The seniors died between December 3rd and 30th.
The victims were between 79 and 102 years old. Korian confirmed 33 of the 53 residents and 24 of the 45 employees were infected. “Despite intensive contact follow-up, which we carried out together with the authorities, it was not possible to clarify beyond doubt how the virus got into our facility“, the operator announced in a message. Despite protective and hygiene measures, the first rapid tests on residents were positive on December 30th.
Residents should be vaccinated by mid-February
The managing director of the senior services city of Hilden and deputy chairwoman of the association of municipal senior and disabled facilities in NRW Beate Linz-Eßer, told him WDR: “Serious drama can happen even in a well-run establishment – but you have to do everything to prevent it.“Korian is now relying on the protection of residents through the vaccination. All residents and employees in inpatient care are to receive the first vaccination by February 14th. In the meantime, the remaining residents and employees have tested negative for Corona.
