15 cases of Mysterious Acute Hepatitis Detected in Indonesia

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin recorded 15 cases acute hepatitis mysteriously found in Indonesia. The case was discovered since April 27, 2022.

“On April 27, Indonesia found three cases in Jakarta and we issued a circular asking all hospitals and social services to carry out the surveillance. So far, there have been 15 cases in Indonesia,” Budi said in an official statement, Monday (9/5).

The Ministry of Health is currently coordinating and discussing with WHO and several countries in Europe to find out the cause of the mysterious disease.

“The conclusion is that it is not yet certain what virus is 100 percent causing this acute hepatitis. The research was carried out together so that the disease could be detected quickly,” he explained.

“It is most likely Adenovirus 41 but there are also many cases where there is no Adenovirus 41. The cause is still being sought,” he added.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK) Muhadjir Effendy appointed the Sulianti Saroso Infectious Disease Hospital (RSPI), North Jakarta, as a referral health facility for cases of mysterious acute hepatitis infections.

At the same time, Muhadjir ensured that all costs of hospital treatment for pediatric patients with symptoms of Ichterus (jaundice) and Hepatitis would be borne by BPJS Health. This is because cases of mysterious hepatitis have so far shown symptoms similar to jaundice.

Muhadjir also instructed that patients with hepatitis or jaundice should be immediately referred to a type A hospital facility for accelerated treatment. He also reminded the public that yellow symptoms in the eye and body area and the condition of the patient being unconscious are symptoms that arise when hepatitis is severe.
