Walther Boelsterlydirector of the Museum of Popular Art (MAP), feels satisfied that 2023 will mark the 14th anniversary of the Biennial Art/Healthy ÷ Artists 7.0: “It is hard work, I can say that diversity and plurality invade the room, but they are indeed pieces that give us a life lesson.”
In this edition it was mounted Art/Healthy ÷ Artists 7.0 in the Temporary Exhibition Hall of the MAP. The public will be able to appreciate in parallel the proposals of 44 teams of creators who worked with various materials—clay, ceramics, textiles, natural fibers and cardboard—an example of the craftsmen’s mastery of the technique.
The pieces are made by skillful and ingenious creators of the State of Mexico, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Jalisco, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Michoacán, Morelos, Oaxaca, Veracruz and Mexico City.
Search proposals and alternative paths For both artisans and artists to share their knowledge and mastery of the craft is the aim of this project since its creation.
This 2023 they met 64 pieces from 230 participantsdistributed in 44 teams whose ideas materialized after dialogue, collaboration and exchange of experiences.

“We worked in interdisciplinary with a craftsman, an artist and an industrial designer or architect and they created a piece; The results are incredible works. In these seven biennials the quality of manufacturing has increased.”
In the center of the room, the work of Gorky González stands out, to whom a post-mortem tribute is paid, as well as Ángela Gurría and Rafael Caudurowho also died this year.
“There are some pieces that are truly wonderful, specifically the guests. On this occasion we have artists, creators and artisans whose works go beyond a handcrafted piece.” In this selection is the work of Olegario Hernández, an engraver from Oaxaca who works impressively on gourds.
“There is no curatorship in the real sense, but rather the invited teams registered with their pieces to participate. I can say that we have had very successful cases that have even managed to have economic benefits very important with the sales of their pieces, and some of them even have contracts with companies. So it is a very interesting expression to which the Popular art museum They give it a lot of momentum,” said Boelsterly.
Testimonials of talent
From its origin, the biennial sought to promote collaboration between artists, craftsmen and architects. Boelsterly assures that the results are enormous, once the creative boundaries have been erased through the seven editions they have carried out, making it clear that talent, ingenuity and imagination are shared in all creative areas.

“This project, inspired by Walter Gropius’ proposal in 1919 from the BauHaus School, is eclectic and wonderful, it can be seen, since it has opened plastic opportunities, experimental, academic and commercial”says the director of the MAP.
He suggests that there will be successes and errors, works that will delight the audience and others that will not convince them, but what is a fact is that the pieces presented are witnesses of the mastery, talent, capacity and authenticity of its creators.
In the world
A success story throughout the life of the biennial, says Boelsterly, is that of Diego Etiennewho worked with a saddler who hotels in Norway hired to make pieces.
Another was the architect Ignacio Urquizar, who worked with Roberto Franco and made his “seed banking”which has been reproduced in different places.
