14 Years Since the Sinking of Ship Ilinden: Tragedy in Lake Ohrid

14 years since the sinking of the ship “Ilinden” in Lake Ohrid are coming to an end on September 5, 2023.

During the incident 15 Bulgarian tourists drowned in Macedonia. The boat was carrying over 50 Bulgarian tourists to the monastery”Saint Naum” and sank in minutes 200 meters from the shore.

Two weeks after the tragic accident, the ship “Ilinden” was brought to the surface. The teams of the Croatian company “Depth” for two hours they pumped the water out of it. /

On July 5, 2011, the main court in Ohrid found the two defendants guilty. The captain of the ship, Sotir Filevski, and the Croatian citizen, Branko Baic, gave a certificate for the fitness of the vessel, were sentenced to one year in prison each. The court considered that Filevski did not adhere to the shipping regulations and thoughtlessly thought that there was no danger by taking over 50 Bulgarian tourists on board the ship. Baich was also convicted for non-compliance with the shipping law.

At the beginning of April 2012, the Court of Appeal in Bitola confirmed the convictions of the two.
