Drew Hassenbein, hailed as one of the most promising talents in tennis, died at just 14 years old in a brutal crash on Wednesday after a head-on collision in New York with another car that was driving into oncoming traffic.
This may be one of the most horrific crashes I have seen in quite some time. The car looks like it exploded, Police Chief Stephen Fitzpatrick told the media.
Three other people were traveling in the car in which Hasenbein was riding – the 17-year-old driver, and two more youths, 16 and 14 years old. After the impact, the driver of the other car, 34-year-old Amandeep Singh, fled the scene. He was later caught by the police and found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.
In addition to Hassenbein, another of the boys he traveled with died – Ethan Falkowitz, also 14 years old, and his friend from the tennis academy where they played sports together.
As a result of the accident, a third car was also hit, in which were a 49-year-old woman and a 16-year-old teenager. They were admitted to hospital in a serious condition, he informed The New York Post.
Several charges are expected to be brought against Singh, including and fleeing the scene of the accident.
