Doha: 14 people, including seven Indians, have been jailed and fined in the case of the medical equipment contract scam in Qatar’s Hamad Medical Corporation. 4 of those convicted are employees of Hamad Hospital.
The convicted Indians are an official of Hamad Medical Corporation and six employees of a contract company. The sentence ranged from four to 14 years in prison.
Charges of corruption, misappropriation of public funds, breach of trust and abuse of office were made in government tenders. An Indian who is an official of Hamad Hospital is the fourth accused in the case. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison and a fine of 31.3 crore riyals.
The first defendant, a Qatari national, was sentenced to 15 years in prison and a fine of 72.9 million riyals, the second defendant, a Jordanian citizen, was sentenced to 11 years in prison and a fine of 17.1 million riyals, and the third defendant, a Palestinian citizen, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and a fine of 14.4 million riyals.
Two Qatari owners of a company contracted to supply medical equipment have been sentenced to five and eight years in prison. A fine of 22.8 crore Riyals and 2.5 crore Riyals were imposed on one person.
There are eight employees in this company. Six of them are Indians and two are Jordanians. Two persons were sentenced to 14 years, two to eight, and the remaining four to 10, six, five and four years.
Fines ranging from 50 lakh Rials to 19.5 crore Rials were also imposed on them. Foreigners were also ordered to be deported after completing their sentence. Koti acquitted the two accused.
