At least 14 Eurostar trains were canceled on Saturday due to flooded tunnels in southern England, disrupting the journeys of thousands of passengers just before the New Year.

Flooded tunnels near Ebbsfleet International Station in Kent.

Eurostar, which operates flights from London to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam via Ashford, halfway between London and the south coast of England, apologized to customers for the disruption.

The company “Southeastern Railway” announced that “there will be no high-speed trains between St Pancras and Ashford International Station today. We are working to prevent flooding in the tunnels”.

Southeastern Railway added in a statement that “flooding between Ebbsfleet International Station and London St Pancras International Station means all lines are blocked. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.”

The company said flooding had affected both rail tunnels near Ebbsfleet, forcing them both to be closed.

Britain’s Met Office has issued warnings of rain, snow and ice across much of the country.
