AFTER THE ATTACK: On Monday night, the police were massively present in the capital after several people were killed and many seriously injured in the attack.

An Austrian 20-year-old suspected perpetrator was shot and killed by police after the terrorist attack in Vienna on Monday. He was an IS sympathizer, according to Interior Minister Karl Nehammer.
A total of 14 people have been arrested after the terrorist attack in Vienna on Monday. This was stated by Minister of the Interior Karl Nehammer at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
He also states that the number of wounded has been raised to a total of 22. This is an increase from the 15 who were confirmed injured earlier.
The death toll is still four: two women and two men. One of these should be one German citizen, according to German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.
The perpetrator killed was a 20-year-old Austrian citizen with North Macedonian roots, said Interior Minister Karl Nehammer on Tuesday morning.
According to Der Standard, the man has previously been sentenced to 22 months in prison for trying to go to Syria to join IS.
In December last year, however, he was conditionally released.
Fewer life-threatening injuries
– Three of the injured have life-threatening injuries, says mayor Michael Ludwig in Vienna at the press conference.
That’s a drop from seven earlier Tuesday. He also states that there are 23 people injured after the attack, one more than the Minister of the Interior informs.
A total of 24 people were taken to hospital in Vienna after the attack, according to the mayor.
– Of these, one has died, ten have been discharged and 13 are still being treated, Ludwig says.
The government has announced a three-day national mourning period, and on Tuesday afternoon a minute of silence was observed for the victims, writes Reuters.
BACKGROUND: The terrorist attack in Vienna: The death toll raised to four
Many things are still unclear about the attack and the person or people who carried it out.
Several questions remain unanswered:
- How many perpetrators were there?
- How planned was the attack?
- What was their motive?
- Who are they?
Harald Sörös, spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior, tells the news agency APA that they assume there are a maximum of four perpetrators. Massive police forces are still working in the Austrian capital to find more people involved in the attack. The police do not rule out that there may have been more perpetrators than the person killed.
“The police currently have no evidence to suggest that there was more than one attacker,” Interior Minister Nehammer said on Tuesday afternoon.
The Minister of the Interior nevertheless said that they still could not conclude that there was no more than one perpetrator.
There are several different locations for the killings and shootings – all in the same area in central Vienna. These have been confirmed, according to Der Standard, which refers to the Ministry of the Interior:
Was killed within nine minutes
According to Nehammer, it took the police nine minutes to neutralize the perpetrator after the attack started, writes Reuters.
The attack started around 20:00 on Monday local and Norwegian time.
– Special forces were called to the area and stopped the attack by shooting and killing the man by 20.09, Nehammer says.
– The perpetrator was radicalized
During the night, the police searched the home of the perpetrator who was shot and killed by the police on Monday night.
According to the minister, the police broke into his home using explosives. It is only after this that the information about the motive has come, both from Nehammer and the police:
The police in Vienna also believe that this is an Islamist-motivated attack.
During the attack, the man had a rifle and “several weapons” according to the police. He was also equipped with a bomb belt, which later turned out to be fake.
During the night, several house searches and investigations have been made around the perpetrator.
Two more people with links to the attack have been arrested, Nehammer confirmed to Der Standard on Tuesday, but it is currently unclear what role they have played.
At 2pm on Tuesday, Reuters reports that another person has been arrested in Linz. No further information has been received about this person either.
