137 Years of Freedom: Celebrating the Statue of Liberty’s Birthday

Today is the anniversary of an icon of the city and the world. We are referring to the Statue of Liberty, which is turning 137 years old.

On this day, in 1886, the emblematic monument was inaugurated in New York Harbor. The statue was a gift from France to the United States for inspiring democracy, in the face of a repressive French monarchy.

The monument has been a symbol of freedom and often the first thing new immigrants saw when passing through Ellis Island.

To celebrate her birthday, the State of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation is launching the Liberty Birthday hashtag.
