135,000 test votes counted: chaos in the New York election

A serious counting error caused chaos in the primary elections for the New York mayoral election. The electoral authority of the US metropolis announced on Wednesday night that 135,000 test voting cards were falsely included in the vote on the top Democratic candidate. A new interim result had been announced beforehand. As a result, the lead of former police officer Eric Adams had shrunk significantly. This result has now been withdrawn. It should now be updated.

the essentials in brief

  • The Democratic and Republican primaries for the actual November vote took place last week.

For the first time, a new voting system was used, according to which up to five favorite candidates could be determined in sequence. After counting the first votes alone, Adams was clearly in the lead. Behind them were human rights attorney Maya Wiley and former city cleaning agent, Kathryn Garcia.

In the liberal stronghold of New York, a winner of the democratic primary is also considered the most likely winner of the actual election – and thus as the successor to Bill de Blasio, who has to retire after two terms in office.
