Ua Pou, 18 December 2022 – After a week of competitions, the Northern Marquesas Games concluded on Friday. Athletes from the north of the archipelago and a handful from Hiva Oa, Fatu Hiva and Tahiti shared a total of 133 medals across the various disciplines.
The streets of Hakahau were teeming with people this week in a festive mood. Indeed, Ua Pou vibrated to the rhythm of the Marquesas Games by hosting around 700 athletes from the north of the archipelago, with a handful of participants from Hiva Oa, Fatu Hiva and Tahiti. They competed in different disciplines: soccer, futsal, volleyball, basketball, tennis, table tennis, petanque, va’a, surfing and, for the first time, traditional sports.
Overall, Ua Pou, the host island with around 300 registered athletes, won the most medals, 63 in total, with 26 golds, 21 silvers and 16 bronzes. In the list she is followed by Nuku Hiva, with about 215 registered athletes, which has won 39 medals. Finally, Ua Huka occupies the third place on the podium, with about 120 entries. She has won 27 medals.
The 4th edition of the Northern Marquesas Games ended on Friday with performances by the stars of the Marquesan night, Pokessi and DJ Vladh, to the delight of young and old. The next edition will take place in 2024 in Ua Huka.
