13,000 euros workshop costs: Why replacing the battery at Tesla costs so much

The battery is still the most expensive component in an electric car. Many e-drivers dread the thought of having to replace the battery, as those affected will have to spend several thousand euros. Even if many manufacturers grant a generous guarantee period for the battery, this does not cover all types of damage

US electric car pioneer Tesla is one of the car manufacturers who give a generous guarantee on the batteries in their electric cars: most problems and damage to the battery are covered by the guarantee for eight years or around 160,000 kilometers. However, there are always exceptional cases in which the guarantee does not apply – then it can be very expensive for those affected.

This is what happened recently at Current Automotive, a used electric car dealer in the US state of Illinois. A Tesla Model 3 was brought in here that drove over an apparently quite large stone. This damaged the battery pack that runs along the underside of the Model 3 so badly that the Stromer immediately gave up the ghost. After the battery was successfully replaced, the owner was presented with an invoice of exactly 16,550.67 dollars, or around 13,800 euros, despite the guarantee.

A blog post by Current Automotive and a picture of the invoice explain how the costs are made up. A new battery for the Model 3 alone accounts for 13,500 dollars (around 11,300 euros). This is a copy that has been “remanufactured” – that is, a used, but original Model 3 battery that was reconditioned before installation .

EFAHRER.com has already extensively tested Tesla’s Model X luxury electric car. You can see how the Stromer performed in the video.

According to the invoice, the amount of work for the replacement is $ 2,300. At the hourly rate of $ 175 that Current Automotive charges, that means the repair took over 13 hours in total.

The $ 16,550 also includes some front and underbody parts that broke in the collision with the stone. However, these parts were comparatively inexpensive, at $ 165 and $ 200 respectively, and would have had to be removed to reach the battery anyway. In addition, a few other smaller parts had to be repaired, such as elements on the wiring harness and the battery cooling, which also had to be replaced with the new battery.

However, Current Automotive advises that most damage to the battery is covered by Tesla’s warranty – even battery fires resulting from improper charging. If the Model 3 had rammed the stone and the battery had subsequently gone up in flames, Tesla’s warranty might even have covered the damage. Before crossing obstacles, drivers of electric cars should always be aware that there is a particularly expensive component slumbering in the underbody of their vehicle.
