About 130 immigrants were left without a place to live after New York firefighters closed a shelter in Midtown.
The FDNY determined that there were no conditions for immigrants to remain in this building on West 31 that housed Touro College and was set up as a shelter.
The closing took place on Monday afternoon.
They pointed out deficiencies in the fire system and lack of extinguishers.
The hundred male immigrants will have to re-register and wait for a spot.
The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, insisted that the City is overwhelmed and that in the absence of temporary shelters, more and more people will be seen sleeping on the streets.
“We no longer have room,” he insisted.
“It’s not a question of ‘if’ people will sleep on the streets, but rather a question of ‘when’ this will happen. We are full, new people are welcomed every day and we don’t have space,” Adams said.
“Until now the city has been fortunate not to suffer the visual signs of this crisis, but they will begin to be seen as they are being seen in other cities,” he added.
