13 years in prison for stabbing a homeless shelter

The Düsseldorf regional court has sentenced a 40-year-old man to 13 years in prison for a knife attack on two women in a homeless shelter. Compensation for pain and suffering of 40,000 euros is added.

A 40-year-old man was sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison in Düsseldorf after he critically injured two homeless aid workers with a knife. In addition, the convicted man must pay 40,000 euros in compensation to one of the women, who was 61 at the time of the crime, reports the “Neue Ruhr Zeitung.” As the newspaper reports, the Düsseldorf regional court considered it proven that the man stabbed the surprised women without warning and insidiously on June 17th.

The incident occurred in the café of a Diakonie facility. The perpetrator originally wanted to make a complaint to the home manager (63), but reacted violently when she asked him for patience. He then turned to the second employee and said, “We also have an invoice outstanding.”

The employee concerned told the court that the man was a regular guest at the facility and that she had not had any problems with him before. When he was arrested, the attacker allegedly said: “I stabbed a woman in the neck” and indicated that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A blood alcohol test confirmed a level of just 0.1 per mille.

The crime scene is in the immediate vicinity of the Düsseldorf police headquarters in Unterbilk. The man was arrested shortly after the attack and, according to the Neue Ruhr Zeitung, has already committed previous violent crimes.
