13-Year-Old Tetris Player Inspires Others and Achieves Milestone

It’s only been a few days since the news spread around the world that only 13-year-old player Willis Gibson was able to finish Tetris. More specifically, he managed to get so far in the game that he can’t generate any more dice and freezes. Until then, only artificial intelligence had managed to do this, so the achievement is truly deserved, and Gibson himself was at a loss for words after reaching this milestone. In the end, a person managed to “finish” Tetris on the NES for the first time in over three decades, so even an inappropriate comment from a Sky News anchor didn’t change that. But now it turned out that Gibson’s performance inspired other players as well, and in short order we have another successful conquest of Tetris.

The first to do it after Gibson is a player with a nickname fractal161 and others P1xelAndy. Regardless of not being first, they still had something to celebrate as Gibson missed the chance due to a minor mistake freezing game at level 155. He conquered the game at level 157, which opened the possibility to improve the record even more, and both players managed to do just that. As Games Radar magazine subsequently states, there is still an option to take success to the next level, by the player avoiding all potential game freezes, not striving for them, and setting a goal of level 255, where everything should start again to return to level 1. It sounds a little crazy, especially when not long ago a person was not capable of this, but the previously mentioned new control methods – led by rolling – obviously offer new opportunities.

In addition to other detractors, the past few days have also seen the reactions of two very important people for Tetris – Henk Rogers, who brought Tetris from the Soviet Union to the West, and indirectly Alexey Pazhitnov, the game’s author himself. Rogers for Global News he first praised Gibson’s performance and expressed his delight at the energy with which the young player set about conquering the title. Subsequently, he confirmed that on the occasion of this milestone, he and Alexej Pažitnov agreed to have lunch, went out for sushi and discussed what Gibson had achieved. “He’s excited,” commented the game’s author Henk Rogers, adding that just mastering the control technique is an achievement in itself. In addition, Pazhitnov should have expressed a certain belief that he definitely did not design the game in such a way that it would go to the end, but Rogers, on the other hand, should have softened this simply by wishing the young player success and letting him enjoy this nice moment.
