NEW YORK — The murder of a 13-year-old boy who was fatally stabbed while on a bus in Staten Island is being investigated as a case of gang violence, New York City police officials said Friday.
The incident took place near Hylan Boulevard and Littlefield Avenue in the Eltingville section of Staten Island on Friday shortly before 2:30 p.m.
The 13-year-old boy was allegedly stabbed three times in the chest after the attacker boarded the S78 bus and began yelling at the other teen, according to witnesses. He was transported to Staten Island University Hospital South, where he was pronounced dead.
According to sources, another 14-year-old boy described as a person of interest is being held in connection with the stabbing.
NYPD officials said Friday night that the stabbing was gang-related.
“Gang signs were displayed up and down,” said Patrol Chief John Chell.
About 20 people, mostly teenagers, were on board the bus at the time of the stabbing. One of the teenagers who witnessed the attack said the young victim was asking for help.
“He screamed, ‘Help, someone call the police! I can’t breathe,'” the teen said.
Investigators were scouring the nearby area for the knife used in the attack, including checking a storm drain directly behind the parked bus.
