13-Year-Old Breaks 34-Year Tetris Record, Reaches “Real” Killscreen at Classic Tetris World Championship

Even those who have no habit of playing video games, I believe they have heard of the classic game “Tetris”. Earlier, a 13-year-old boy finally became the world’s first player 34 years after the game was launched on the Nintendo Famicom. Human players succeeded in defeating it. Before that, only artificial intelligence had ever succeeded.

In the 2023 Classic Tetris World Championship held at the end of last year, the 13-year-old Blue Scuti not only reached level 157 in the Famicom version of “Tetris”, but also won and appeared in a “real” Killscreen. That is, the screen where the game freezes and cannot be continued is a unique achievement in the 34 years since the game was launched. Players always thought that “Tetris” only had 29 levels, but later players began to research new controller operation technologies, including Hypertapping and Rolling, which greatly improved the pressing speed and thus exceeded the level limit.

In 2021, player EricICX reached level 95 of the game. Later, player Fractal161 crashed the game when challenging level 153. Blue Scuti was the first human player to successfully beat the game. In the later stages of the game, there will be levels with color mutations, which greatly increase the difficulty, and it is extremely difficult to persist for a long time. In an interview after the win, Blue Scuti admitted that his hands were tingling and he could no longer feel his hands.
