NEW JERSEY — A 13-year-old boy faces several charges related to a series of car thefts in Bayonne, New Jersey, according to police.
From February 16, 2024 to March 4, numerous Kia and Hyundai motor vehicles were stolen or attempted to be stolen within the city limits.
The alleged thief followed the same pattern in each case: The suspect would break a side window to get into the car, access the ignition module by removing or attempting to remove the steering column cover, and escape in the car or attempt to do so.
Authorities arrested the 13-year-old Jersey City resident near the West 51st Street area of Bayonne on Monday.
Officers responded to the area of Islandview Court for a report of a vehicle theft. Officers met with the victim, who stated that after hearing a loud noise coming from outside, she looked out the window of her apartment and observed her Hyundai being stolen.
After a high-speed chase followed by a foot chase, the teenage suspect was taken into custody. During the chase, police discovered another vehicle that was also attacked.
While the 13-year-old was being processed, detectives investigating the next 14 reported robberies and/or vehicle thefts were able to positively identify him as the primary suspect in all incidents.

Police recovered several cars that were stolen in Bayonne and other jurisdictions and were returned to their respective owners.
