The 13-year-old boy found dead in the woods near his home in suburban Stockholm earlier this month is the latest victim of Sweden’s deadly gang war, a prosecutor said, the Associated Press reported.

Milo, who was identified only by his first name, was shot in the head in a chilling example of “brutal and completely reckless gang violence,” prosecutor Lisa dos Santos said. He is believed to have been shot in Hanninge, south of Stockholm. She declined to provide further details because of the ongoing investigation.

Swedish media, which published pictures of Milo with the permission of his family, said the body was moved to the forest after the boy – who was not known to police – was killed. He was reported missing on September 8 and his body was found by a passer-by three days later.

Criminal gangs have become a growing problem in Sweden, where drive-by shootings, bombings and grenade attacks have become increasingly common. Most of the violence is in Sweden’s three largest cities: Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.

As of September 15, police had counted 261 shootings in Sweden this year, of which 34 were fatal and 71 people were injured.

In September alone, there were four shootings in the Scandinavian country, three of them fatal, in Uppsala, west of Stockholm, and in the Swedish capital. One of the victims is 13-year-old Milo./BTA
