On 21 December, Gibson – who is known in the gaming world as “blue scuti” – managed to force a so-called “kill screen”, where the code behind the game cannot do any more, and the game breaks down.
In the classical sense, it may not sound like winning a game, but among avid gamers who push both games and machines to the limit, such a victory over the game is sought after.
The 13-year-old’s achievement is also being noticed because many have seen the classic Nintendo version of the game – where players must stack ‘bricks’ correctly to make them disappear – as unbeatable. It has no programmed end, the blocks just keep coming in an eternal stream. Although the best players have constantly found new ways to extend the game and gain more and more points, everyone has had to give up eventually.
The company behind Tetris is also impressed by Gibson.
– Congratulations to “blue scuti” for this extraordinary achievement, which surpasses all previously assumed limits for this legendary game, says Tetris CEO Maya Rogers.
The game, which was invented by the Russian mathematician Aleksei Pazjitnov, also turns 40 this year.
