At least 13 women and girls died after falling into a well in India. The incident occurred during a large wedding party in northern India.
Reported from AFPThursday (17/2/2022), senior police official in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, Akhil Kumar, said the victims initially sat on metal plates that covered the top of the well.
But suddenly, the iron plate collapsed and the victims tfell into the well. In the incident on Wednesday (16/2) local time, the victims were reportedly buried under the rubble.
The local district judge, S Rajalingam, said the well was old and unable to withstand the weight of the people sitting on its cover.
“The victims fell and were crushed by the debris,” Kumar said in a statement to local reporters.
The depth and width of the well are not known. There has been no detailed explanation of how many people were sitting on the cover of the well when the incident occurred.
But local police say at least 13 people died in this incident. It is also said that women and children gather to take part in wedding rituals in their village.
