Offspring 13 Penguin Chicks Hatched in Frankfurt Zoo
Frankfurt Zoo is celebrating the arrival of 13 penguin chicks this breeding season. The penguin facility is expected to be busier than usual as the chicks continue to hatch. While most of them are still in the breeding caves, one young penguin has been spotted happily swimming in the facility’s pool.
“It’s nice to see that there are young animals in the Humboldt penguins in the zoo again,” said Ina Hartwig, head of the Frankfurt Department of Culture. “The fact that the animals are having offspring shows us that they feel very comfortable in the large, naturally designed facility.”
The facility, which opened in 2019, had five young penguins in its first breeding season. Since then, more couples have formed, bringing the total number of adult penguins to 27. There are still some “singles” who could potentially pair up, as penguins are known to be predominantly monogamous.
The Humboldt penguins at Frankfurt Zoo originally come from the coasts of Chile and Peru, making them adaptable to warmer temperatures. While they don’t require a cold house, the pool temperature is checked daily during summer to ensure the penguins can cool down if needed. If the water gets too warm, cool well water is added.
The arrival of these 13 penguin chicks is a testament to the successful breeding program at Frankfurt Zoo and the care provided to the penguins. Visitors can look forward to seeing these adorable new additions as they grow and explore their surroundings.

Frankfurt Zoo is buzzing with excitement as 13 adorable penguin chicks have hatched during this breeding season. The penguin facility is abuzz with activity as the little ones make their grand entrance into the world. Although most of them are still snugly nestled in the breeding caves, one adventurous chick has already been spotted joyfully swimming in the facility’s pool.
Ina Hartwig, the head of the Frankfurt Department of Culture, expressed her delight, saying, “It’s wonderful to see the Humboldt penguins at the zoo welcoming new additions once again. The fact that they are successfully breeding indicates that they are thriving and feel entirely at home in our spacious, natural facility.”
Ever since the penguin facility opened its doors in 2019, it has been a breeding haven. During its inaugural breeding season, five adorable chicks were born. Since then, more penguin couples have budded, resulting in a total of 27 adult penguins at the zoo. There are still a few single penguins who might find their perfect match, as penguins are predominantly monogamous creatures.
