13.2 million Dutch people are allowed to vote: these are the elections in figures | NOW

About 13.2 million Dutch people are allowed to vote in the parliamentary elections in 2021. Below are a number of facts and especially figures about the elections in a row.

These are the 29th national election since 1918 (the first with universal suffrage).

Number of participating parties: 37 parties participate in these parliamentary elections. That’s a post-war record. 28 parties participated in 1971, 1981 and 2017. The absolute record was set in the 1922 elections, when 53 parties participated.

Number of candidates: 1,579 persons have stood for election this time. In 2017, 1,116 people stood for election and in 2012 it was 972 candidates.

Age of voters: more than 2.4 million voters are seventy years or older. They were allowed to vote by post. Their vote had to be posted last Friday afternoon at the latest.

Number of municipalities in which you can vote: 352 municipalities in the Netherlands and 3 special municipalities in the Caribbean Netherlands (Bonaire, Sint-Eustatius and Saba).

This is – due to municipal reorganisations – a lot less than in the elections in 2017. At that time there were 388 municipalities (apart from the 3 special municipalities in the Caribbean Netherlands). In the 2012 elections, the Netherlands still had 415 municipalities.

Number of stations where you can vote: voters can go to 40 train stations to cast their vote. On Mondays and Tuesdays, polling stations are already open at Utrecht Central, Bilthoven, Den Bosch, Hilversum, Leiden Central and Schiedam Centrum stations.

On Wednesday, on the ‘real’ election day, people can vote at major stations such as Amsterdam Central, Amersfoort Central, The Hague Central, The Hague HS and Groningen, but also at stations such as Gilze-Rijen, Meppel, Nijverdal and Almere Muziekwijk. In 2017, people could vote on more than 60 stations.

Number of Dutch nationals living abroad who have registered to vote: nearly 93,000. That is considerably more than in the previous elections. In 2017, just over 80,000 Dutch people were registered as voters abroad and in 2012 over 48,000.

In us election live blog we will keep you informed of all developments surrounding the polls.
