Today’s computer components have many wonderful solutions and technological curiosities, but not all of their elements deserve recognition. Many gamers have a lot of comments about the 12VHPWR power socket used in efficient NVIDIA GeForce cards. It turns out to be hot and – overall – problematic in many respects even for enthusiasts. Fortunately, a newer and much better standard, 12V-2×6, has already been created.
It seems that the 12V-2×6 socket will quickly replace the infamous 12VHPWR standard, especially since the new solution apparently works without any problems even with severely bent cables.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Founders Edition – the graphics card is equipped with a socket resembling the 12V-2×6 revision
A report on the tests of the 12V-2×6 power connector, which was carried out at Linewell (which produces, among others, power cables for ASUS), has just appeared on the Hardware Busters YouTube channel. The first test lasted over 50 minutes and included the operation of the connector under full load (660 W). As it turned out, the nest coped with this without any problems, and at the same time it had a relatively low temperature, not exceeding 46.5°C. Therefore, you cannot be afraid of, for example, melting of some connector elements. The second test, however, should be much more important, especially for those who were put off by the problematic construction of the 12VHPWR port.
MSI rejects claims for graphics cards if damage results from the use of an external 12VHPWR adapter
The test consisted in – colloquially speaking – quite sloppily plugging in the connector, without pressing it, and applying almost full power. As it turns out, even in such a scenario, the 12V-2×6 connector was able to transmit all the available power, and at the same time… it worked at a slightly lower temperature of 41°C, which is quite an interesting phenomenon. It is worth adding that the new connector is mainly characterized by shortened pins with better conductivity, which lower the voltage resistance of the power supply passing through the connector. The 12V-2×6 socket should quickly replace the infamous 12VHPWR standard, especially since the new solution apparently works without any problems even with severely bent cables. As we know, NVIDIA has already quietly started using the refreshed socket in the reference GeForce RTX 4000 series cards. So we expect that we will not see it in subsequent new units (from this or next generation).
