Viersen. Last Saturday, the 12th International Sparkasse Krefeld U11 Cup took place on the grounds of SV Blau Weiß Concordia Viersen (BWC Viersen) in Helenabrunn. Again this year, the Blue and Whites welcomed 24 teams from the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, the youth academies (NLZ) from the professional area and regional teams. As in previous years, the teams that had to travel a long way were accommodated with host families.

The preliminary round took place in very nice spring weather, in which a lot of nice games developed and, as expected, the NLZ teams came out on top and qualified for the quarter-finals.

The home team from BWC Viersen had to learn the hard way in Group C against strong competition and finished the preliminary round in last place.
You shouldn’t look too much at the result here, but that the boys fought in every game and tried to playfully free themselves from the pressure of the NLZ teams. The boys can learn a great deal from these games.

In the intermediate round, the U11 team from Viersen won 3:1 against the team from Wassenberg-Orsberg, which qualified them for the game for 21st place. Unfortunately, the team from Fortuna Sachsenross Hannover had to admit defeat in the 9 meter shootout.

The teams from Borussia Mönchengladbach, Hannover 96, Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hertha BSC Berlin then prevailed in the quarter-finals. The semifinals were as follows:

Borussia Monchengladbach – Fortuna Dusseldorf
Hannover 96 – Hertha BSC Berlin

Before the semi-finals, the weather then turned from glorious sunshine to overcast with intermittent rain. The change in weather had no impact on the performances shown by the teams. In the semi-finals, Borussia MG and Hertha from Berlin prevailed.
In a very exciting final, Hertha had the greater share of the game and chances and deservedly won 2-0 in the end. Again, congratulations to the well-deserved winner!

On Sunday, a number of NLZ teams and local teams met and played performance comparisons with each other on the BWC facility. The stars of tomorrow have measured themselves at a high level.

The catering for the participating teams was covered by a catering service, which provided hot lunches for all players and coaches. Volunteers from the club made sure that everything ran smoothly on the days of the tournament. A cafeteria was set up that covered almost all wishes at two locations. With classics such as rolls, cakes, waffles, grilled specialties and fries, but also bowls, fruit cups and milk shakes, the range was really varied. Thanks a lot for this!

A big thank you also to the organizers who worked in the background and made this tournament possible and not in the foreground. It should also be mentioned here that the changing rooms were closed until one day before the tournament due to renovation work after the bad fire in the gym and that a plan B always had to be running in the background for the “normal” tournament preparation.

Only in this way and only together as a club is it possible to organize such a tournament.
