127 missed after ships went down when cyclone hit India

Two rescue ships and several helicopters are being used in the search after the vessel went down, the Indian Navy states.

273 people were on board the vessel when it became drifting in strong winds on Monday, and later went down.

According to the country’s Ministry of Defense, 146 people were rescued from the vessel, which was in operation for a state oil company. The search for more survivors continues beyond Tuesday in what is described as extremely demanding sea conditions.

Roads turned into rivers

There were strong winds and big waves when the cyclone hit corona-hit India. Several roads turned into rivers in the devastation of the cyclone.

The violent cyclone caused gusts of up to 185 kilometers per hour when it hit land in Gujarat.

This has led to floods, felled trees and major damage. Several thousand have been forced to flee the country, which has already been hit by one of the world’s worst corona crises.

Up to 20 deaths have so far been reported in several Indian states as a result of the cyclone’s devastation.

The cyclone is the most powerful to hit the state in decades. In several places there are power outages due to the strong wind. In the coastal city of Diu, sea levels rose by three meters.

In the million-strong city of Mumbai, several hundred corona patients in field hospitals were moved to safer premises before the cyclone struck the city. The airport in the city was closed and the population was encouraged to stay indoors.

Creates corona problems

The powerful cyclone has exacerbated the situation for an Indian health service that was already at a breaking point due to the corona crisis, which kills around 4,000 people daily.

In Gujarat, all corona patients in hospitals within five kilometers of the coastline were relocated. Around 200,000 people were evacuated in the state.

The authorities in the affected states are doing everything they can to prevent the power going to the corona hospitals and oxygen producers.

In several places, the vital vaccination has been put on hold as a result of the storm.

– This cyclone is a terrible double blow for millions of people in India, who are already hard hit by coronary heart disease and death, says Udaya Regmi in the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

The organization assists in the evacuation of the risk areas along the coast, and so that corona patients do not suffer injuries.
