1250 euros were donated for Giraffe Vakilija’s meals
Riga, Sept. 7, LETA. 1250 euros were donated for the meals of Riga Zoo giraffe Vakilija, the information service of the zoo informed LETA.
The campaign was launched on the giraffe’s two-year birthday on August 9. To provide one day with three types of special feed pellets, alfalfa powder and special mineral additives, which she receives in addition to the basic feed – willow twigs, alfalfa wall and oats, 25 euros are needed.
Donations for giraffe meals will continue to be needed.
According to the zoo, the Austrian-born giraffe Vakilija at the Schmiding Zoo left for Riga on July 22 and celebrated his two-year birthday with Kimi, a 14-year-old giraffe boy from the Riga Zoo.
The new resident has already got to know his commoners and now on sunny days sometimes goes out to the big giraffe’s paddock, although he feels much safer in the shed at the giraffe’s house, where he is not afraid of visitors.
Feeding giraffes in zoos is quite specific. Their main food is willow twigs and bark, as well as alfalfa hay. In addition, three types of feed pellets (a total of 3.8 kg per day) are provided, which are supplied by specialized zoo feed companies in Western Europe.
