A number of incidents have increased tensions in the French education system. A 12 year old female student threaten a teacher with a knife at a school in northern France.
Reported AFPThursday (14/12/2023), no one was injured in the incident in the northwestern city of Rennes, but prosecutors said they had opened a criminal investigation.
“This morning, a student threatened a teacher with a knife during class. The students were shocked and immediately moved to a safe place,” the local education authority said in a statement.
Born in 2011, the student “came to class armed with a large knife with the intention of killing her English teacher,” said Rennes prosecutor Rennes Philippe Astruc.
During class, the student brandished a knife at the victim who ran away, before being disarmed by Hautes Ourmes Middle School staff.
Tensions have risen in schools in France, which has large Muslim and Jewish communities, sometimes linked to the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.
Last October, a student stabbed his former teacher Dominique Bernard to death in the northern city of Arras.
Earlier this week teachers at a school outside Paris refused to work after a group of students objected to a class showing a painting by Renaissance master Giuseppe Cesari that featured several naked women.
Meanwhile, a French court last week convicted six teenagers for their role in the 2020 murder of teacher Samuel Paty outside a secondary school near Paris.
