A 12-year-old boy shot and killed an intruder after two gunmen broke into his grandmother’s home in incidents in North Carolina, police said.
WRAL reported that the boy, who has not been identified, attacked Khalil Herring, 19, on February 13 after he and another masked suspect entered the home of Linda Ellis, 73, in Goldsboro. The men broke into the house around 12:30 am, and asked for money, the channel added.
Police said Herring shot Ms. Ellis in the leg, prompting the 12-year-old to open fire on the suspect, according to The New York Post.

“[El intruso] he just shot his grandmother … He would also have shot him (the child), he would also have shot me, he would have killed us all, ”he told ABC 11 Randolph Bunn, the boy’s great-uncle and Mrs. Ellis’s son.

Police found Ellis with a gunshot wound in his apartment, WRAL said. The 73-year-old woman was taken to Wayne UNC Health Care for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, the station added.
The intruder, Herring, later succumbed to his gunshot wound, WRAL reported.
Information on the second suspect has not yet been released, but police told him a ABC11 that an investigation is ongoing.

“The 12-year-old minor, occupant of the residence, fired at the suspects with a firearm in self-defense, causing them to flee the area,” the officials wrote, according to the channel.

However, Herring was later found at a nearby intersection with a gunshot wound, WRAL reported.
“Preliminary evidence suggests that Khalil Herring was one of two masked intruders and was shot during the robbery,” the officials continued in the statement, added WRAL.
Police do not plan to charge the boy in connection with Herring’s death, according to local media According to numerous local media reports, Goldsboro police do not plan to press charges against the 12-year-old in connection with Herring’s death. Police described the shooting as “self defense” in nature, reported ABC 11.
Bunn told ABC 11 that he did not know why Herring shot his mother.
“They entered the house, I open the door, I open it and they went in… A guy had a gun. They just threw me to the ground, ”shared with the station the son of the grandmother who was shot. “[Ellis] he was in the kitchen, I don’t know why they shot him ”.
Linda Ellis’s great-niece, Chiquita Coley Ellis, explained to WRAL that she couldn’t believe what happened to her great-grandmother.
He described the 73-year-old woman as a “good person”, reported WRAL.
“My phone was constantly ringing, and ringing and ringing,” Chiquita Coley Ellis told the station. “He couldn’t believe they shot him because he’s a good person.”
The great-niece added that random acts of violence in the area must stop, according to WRAL.
“Why would someone walk into your house and do this? It has to stop, ”Chiquita said. Coley Ellis a WRAL. “I don’t know what they’re thinking here in Goldsboro, but it has to end.”
He further added that the 12-year-old boy and the rest of his family still “stick together” despite the unfortunate encounter, WRAL said.
