The vast solar system holds various mysteries, such as alien planets that have strange characteristics and are very different from Earth. Which planet is the strangest?
Until now, exploration to search for other planets outside our solar system continues to be the focus of scientists. They believe there are still many alien planets that can be identified and studied.
So, what alien planets are known and have strange characteristics? The following list is quoted from Space.
12 Strangest Alien Planets
1. Planet Mega Earth
This planet is called the Kepler 10c planet or Godzilla Earth because it is 2.3 times larger and 17 times heavier than Earth. This planet orbits the star Kepler 10 with its sibling, Kepler 10b, about 570 light years away in the constellation Draco.
2. Largest Planet
The super large planet that has been discovered is 1.7 times the size of Jupiter. This planet is nicknamed the TrES-4 planet and belongs to a small subclass that has low density.
This planet is located 1,400 light years from Earth and takes three and a half days to orbit its parent star, namely GSC 0262000648.
3. Planet with Three Suns
This next strange planet has three Suns with the main star having a mass like the mass of Earth’s Sun. This planet is known as HD 188753 which has a shape similar to Jupiter.
Planet HD 188753 is about 149 light years from Earth. It can be said that this planet is quite hot because it orbits very close to its star for 3.5 days.
4. Coldest Planet
The planet, known as OGLE-2005-BLG-390L b, is the coldest planet with a rocky surface that has a temperature of around -220 degrees Celsius.
This planet is 5.5 times larger than Earth and orbits a red dwarf star about 28,000 light years away. So this planet is also called the farthest planet.
5. Hottest Planet
Not only the coldest planet, there is also the hottest planet called WASP-12b. This planet has a temperature of around 2,200 degrees Celsius and is 1.5 times the mass of Jupiter and is a gas planet.
WASP-12b orbits its star 3.4 million kilometers away. Meanwhile, with Earth, it is about 870 light years away.
6. The Lightest Planet
A planet called HAT-P-1 is a planet that could be lighter than a cork ball, making it the lightest alien planet to date.
This planet is half the size of Jupiter and is 1.76 times wider or about 24 percent larger. It is possible that if there was a large water reservoir, this planet could float in it.
7. Planet Miring
In general, planets orbit in their plane according to the equator of the host star. However, this is different from the planet called XO-3b which orbits at an inclination of 37 degrees from the equator of its star.
It is possible that this happened because of an error during the planet’s formation. Even though it is strange, a tilted planet like this has actually also existed on the planet Pluto, which has dwarf planet status.
8. Water Planet
Planet GJ 1214b is said to be a rocky planet that is rich in water with a dense center and has a mass between the size of Earth and Neptune.
Meanwhile, its size is about three times the size of Earth and 6.5 times larger. GJ 1214b is about 40 light years away and orbits a red dwarf star.
9. Diamond Planet
This diamond planet is named PSR J1719-1438 which is considered a giant diamond. It is known that these diamonds are caused by ultra-high pressure which causes the carbon in them to crystallize into diamonds.
It doesn’t stop there, another possibility says that this planet was once a star, but most of its mass was sucked up by a small pulsar which rotated at a speed of 10,000 revolutions per minute. This planet is 4,000 light years from Earth.
10. Darkest Planet
The next strange planet is planet TrES-2b which is known as the darkest alien planet. Even the darkness of this planet is darker than the blackest coal.
This planet is the size of Jupiter and reflects less than one percent of the light, which is why it is darker than other planets in the solar system. From Earth itself, this planet is 750 light years away.
11. Planet that is threatened with destruction
This endangered planet is WASP-18b. This planet is threatened with extinction because it revolves around the star in less than one Earth day. So this speed produces a gravitational pull that can change the planet’s orbit.
If the rotation is faster, the planet will gradually move towards the Sun and will automatically experience destruction.
12. The Most Populous Planet
This foreign planet is known as the densest planet with the name COROT-exo-3b. This planet is the size of Jupiter, but with a mass 20 times that of that planet, which means it is twice as dense as lead. Scientists suspect that COROT-exo-3b is a brown dwarf star.
So, those are the 12 strangest alien planets that have ever been discovered. Unique, right?
