Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
A total of 12 ministers India reported mass resignations on Wednesday (7/7), including the health minister, who has been in the spotlight amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Reuters reported that one of the ministers who resigned was the Minister of Health, Harsh Vardhan.
According to a close source, the move is a political price for the government’s struggle to overcome the wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Indian Express reported that other ministers who also resigned were Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Minister of Law and Justice, Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad, as well as Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar.
Ada pula Babul Supriyo, Sadananda Gowda, Santosh Gangwar, Debasree Chaudhuri, Rattan Lal Kataria, Sanjay Dhotre, Thawarchand Gehlot, Pratap Chandra Sarangi, and Ashwini Chaubey (MoS).
A number of media reported that the twelve ministers resigned after Prime Minister Narendra Modi was reported to be reshuffling his cabinet.
The reshuffle comes as Modi’s government faces its most scathing criticism in years as Covid-19 infections and deaths spiked in April and May.
Local media reports said a reshuffle was also possible at the labor ministry. However, the ministers of finance, foreign affairs, home affairs, and defense are unlikely to be overhauled.
state media, Radio All India, reported that Modi is expected to appoint a younger cadre from his party to become ministers. It is also reported to give a larger portion to women.
