A 118 rescue helicopter crashed in the early afternoon of today, Saturday 16 March, on the Alagna side of Monte Rosa. The aircraft, based in Borgosesia, fell near the Capanna Regina Margherita refuge.
Fortunately, as it turns out, none of the four people on board
(pilot, Alpine Rescue technician, flight technician and dog handler) would have been injured. The Aosta and AirZermatt air ambulances are intervening on site and the mountain rescue team of the 10th Valdossola delegation has also been alerted. The 118 helicopter – a Victor Echo – had been called for a rescue operation. The take-off, it was learned, took place after the report of a person who had fallen into a crevasse, in an area on the border with Switzerland. The person, already extracted, is alive. The causes of the accident are yet to be ascertained, although the main culprit appears to be strong winds. The Capanna Regina Margherita, at 4,554 metres, is the highest alpine refuge in Europe.
«The general director of Azienda Zero, Adriano Leli and the director of the 118 helicopter rescue service, Roberto Vacca, – informs a note – are reaching the helicopter rescue base of the Borgosesia hospital to meet the staff. The President of the Region Alberto Cirio and the Health Councilor Luigi Icardi, immediately informed, continue to follow the incident.”
