As of January 1, 2018, Occitania had 5,885,496 inhabitants. It still remains the fifth of the thirteen metropolitan regions by its population, behind Île-de-France, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Hauts-de-France and Nouvelle-Aquitaine, and ahead of the Grand Est.
Between 2013 and 2018, Occitania gained an average of 40,300 inhabitants per year (+ 0.7%). This demographic growth, higher than in mainland France, is mainly driven by net migration, arrivals in the region being significantly more numerous than departures.
Compared to the previous period, under the effect of a combined slowdown in natural and migratory dynamics, population growth is slowing down in Occitania. But the dynamics are not homogeneous on the regional territory.
Demographic growth is still very strong in Haute-Garonne and Hérault. Five other departments of Occitanie gained inhabitants between 2013 and 2018: the Pyrénées-Orientales, Tarn, Aude, Tarn-et-Garonne and Gard. Six departments which are more rural, Ariège, Aveyron, Gers, Hautes-Pyrénées, Lot and Lozère, are experiencing relative stability. Likewise, within each department there are differences between agglomerations or between municipalities.
Through synthetic and illustrated files, this file presents, for Occitania and each of its 13 departments, the demographic situation on January 1, 2018 and its recent evolution. Presentation declined in each departmental sheet, at the level of municipalities, agglomerations but also areas of attraction of cities, new zoning developed by INSEE in 2020.
