11,000 cases of attacks reported against educational institutions in 93 countries between 2015 and 2019 (Cosydep)

The Global Week of Action for Education is organized every year, in more than 100 countries by millions of activists, in favor of the right to inclusive quality education and lifelong learning opportunities.

This year, the Global Week of Action for Education addresses the theme of “Protecting Education in Emergencies. » With the conflicts which are accentuated in several corners of the globe, it is urgent to save the sector of Education which is well under threat.

In the East Asia and Pacific region, the impacts of climate change are one of the main drivers of crises. In the region of Latin America and the Caribbean, natural disasters and the daily risks of violence, abuse and exploitation deprive millions of young people of their right to education. In Africa, in the Sahel region, the conflicts and the aggravation of the humanitarian crisis are making it increasingly difficult to access quality education, especially in countries such as Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.

The Coalition of Organizations in Synergy for the Defense of Public Education organizing a panel this Thursday within the framework of this global week of action for education, raised the question on the possibilities of curbing the factors which affect the sector. Thus, the cases of attacks on educational establishments are counted with regret. Indeed, according to the civil society organization, between 2015 and 2019, education is the target of deliberate attacks with more than 11,000 reported against educational institutions, in at least 93 countries. Like other regions of the world, Senegal experiences situations that delay or call into question the effectiveness of the right to education.

In addition to these attacks, there are environmental problems that cause frequent flooding leading to the deterioration of school infrastructure and the closure or relocation of establishments.
