It is a sad fact. In the Lesquin cemetery, near Lille, residents discovered that graves had been looted in mid-May. 110 tombs were vandalized, with thieves concentrating on statuettes, vases and copper ornaments, in order to resell them.
The first desecrations were discoveries with dismay : “There was a fairly high statue and we can see that it is broken at the level of the stone”, notes this inhabitant. Bronze crosses, pewter statues, copper vases, everything more than a hundred concessions were looted among the twenty-two alleys of the cemetery.
These precious metals are particularly targeted by thieves because easy to smelt and resell : “It’s just to make money on the backs of our deceased and I find that really outrageous“, testifies Françoise, noting the thefts on the grave of her daughter.
Families complain
many families decided to file a complaintshocked that this could happen in Lesquin, a town of 7,500 inhabitants: “Even small towns are not immune to this kind of thing”notes Valérie, resident of the city.
In the days preceding the desecrations, surveillance cameras had been removed by the town hall for works. They will be reinstalled very quickly.
