Today marks 11 years since Hurricane Sandy hit the city.
Over the course of 48 hours, wind, rain and water destroyed about 300 homes and damaged thousands more. Hundreds of thousands of residents were left without power.
Sandy caused an estimated $19 billion in damage and loss of economic activity throughout the city. It also damaged critical public and private infrastructure.
44 New Yorkers died in the storm and thousands more were temporarily displaced from their homes.
Mayor Adams has said that Sandy was not just a storm but a warning that another similar storm could hit at any time.
Events will be held today to commemorate the anniversary.
Activists insist that more measures need to be taken to combat climate change.
