11-year-old skateboarder does historical trick

Tony Hawk trumps

Gui Khury from Brazil creates an incredible three turns around his own axis in the halfpipe. Nobody had ever made the “1080” before him – not even the superstars of the scene.

Before this weekend, Gui Khury was a highly talented skateboarder. 11 years young, one of very few in the scene who have made the most difficult jump ever made: the «900», two and a half turns around its own axis. With this trick at the latest, Tony Hawk, the superstar of the scene, achieved legendary status in 1999 – Hawk was the first to stand the «900».

21 years later, Khury rewrites the history of skateboarding – or at least adds a glorious chapter to it. The setting is actually not worthy of the event, but it fits the Corona period all the better. It is not a celebrated competition with fans, no: in the halfpipe built especially for him right next to the grandmother’s house, the Brazilian creates history. He is the first person to stand the «1080» – that is three complete revolutions around his own axis and thus half more than everyone else before him.

“I thought: ‘Oh my god, what have I just done?'” Says Khury in an interview with the Reuters news agency. But the boy is already thinking ahead: “I want to continue training so that I can stand the jump in competitions too. And I dream of doing one more turn. » To celebrate the day, he asked for his parents to have macaroni and cheese.

His father Ricardo Khury Filho is probably more aware of the historical extent of the jump. He manages his son’s social media channels and has the halfpipe built especially for his son. The success owes this to the current situation, among other things: “Isolation during the corona virus helped him. Because otherwise his life is all about school and he doesn’t have enough time to train. Now he eats healthier and has more time to focus on his training. » And to put the legends of his sport in the shade.
